Okay, it's time for me to address the Doug-sized elephant in the room.
Horizontal lifts.
For those uninformed, there was a bug in the game that allowed you to rotate conveyor lifts in some really funky ways.
This was documented on our end, like this, and we fixed it.
We did game development.
Except it turns out this was actually a pretty cool method to get some interesting designs for our more expressive builders.
Doug and Nova made a great video about this, and I'll link it down below.
Naturally, folks were pretty upset that we removed this, and we get that.
My first reaction was, well, of course we have to add it back in.
We took away something that allowed people to express themselves.
It felt like removing hyper-tube cannons.
You know, a harmless exploit that players enjoy utilizing.
However, we do like to do our due diligence around here, and we had extensive conversations about this.
We learned that this bug was actually causing some rendering and performance issues because doing this exploit basically breaks the logic of the conveyor lift, which causes the items on the belt to render off screen.
This causes unnecessary and unexpected rendering costs.
It leads to performance issues, especially on lower end machines.
That being said though, we understand why players are utilizing this.
It gives you more expressive builds, aesthetic freedom, and frankly, just awesome effects like a waterfall of items.
We see this and while we won't be reverting the bug, we're going to remember this desire for a future update.
