Do you think Final Fantasy will ever go back to like a turn-based fighting system?
Jace
I feel like it's a mechanic that's just dated now, so no one will go back to it, but like...
know and i'm not even sure anyone really wants it but at the same time i like i i don't know like i i know that the yakuza like a dragon came out with a turn-based battle system and a lot of people who are huge fans of yakuza uh franchise you know myself included uh really enjoyed that battle system um i didn't like that battle system but not because it was turn-based but because of the way it was implemented but you know i i think i'm still down to play turn-based
RPGs, I think I totally am.
So like, you know, maybe that mechanic isn't dead.
Snutt
Yeah, I'm kind of curious.
Because I mean, I don't think the remake turn-based option counts, because it was clearly not like actual turn-based.
It was more like they kind of like put it together, and it kind of worked, but it certainly didn't feel like they were able to design around that.
Jace
Yeah, and I mean, I don't feel that like the way that the combat is now, the real-time action kind of combat in the new Final Fantasies or whatever.
I don't feel like...
I don't feel that that is better than turn-based, honestly.
It's something.
I mean, you get to press more buttons.
And if that's what matters to you, pressing a lot of buttons, then like, okay, then you will like that better.
But I mean, the times that I've been able to sit there and think through my attacks...
you know, in the Final Fantasy X, you know, turn-based thing where there's no time.
Like, I found that to be a great challenge and fun.
There's a more strategic element to how you want to lay it out.
Exactly.
X also had that cool thing
Snutt
where you could see which order of attacks
Jace
to... Yeah, your initiative.
Yeah, exactly.
And, like, how certain attacks would affect that.
Yeah, that was cool.
Some things would slow you down, right?
Yeah.
So that was...
Yeah, I don't know.
I think that that stuff's really fun, but I think that developers might be too scared to go back to it because with the action things now, it's like, but it looks good, and it can feel good as well.
But I still think there's a lot of value in being strategic and pausing for a second and assessing the situation.
Yeah.
