So, this weekend, Satisfaction Labs were hosting their, I almost wanted to say annual 128 challenge, but they were hosting their 128 challenge where they try to make, get as many people into one server as possible and do stuff together, build a tower.

of players, and they managed to get 47 players, I believe, in one tower, which is pretty nutty.

And I just realized I should have had a photo of that ready right now, so I could have shown that on stream.

But that's not the way we roll things around here.

The reason why it's called 128 is because I tweeted at some point, I think that's where this idea came from, where I tweeted about how theoretically the limit of players in our version of the engine is 128 players, theoretically.

um so yeah the reason it's called 128 is because the we're using a signed byte for for uh indexing players and the maximum value for that is 127 and we're using serial index so we can get 128 players in uh one thing that i haven't announced but we've talked a bit with epic about this uh and theoretically the actual engine limit is a signed one so you could theoretically get 250

five players in one session from epic's end like unreal engine by default supports 24 255. so i've been thinking of actually supporting that so you have to rebrand 128 to 255 or something uh i don't know

why

yeah i don't know why i would do that because i don't think we'll ever get a server where you can actually have 128 people running uh or yeah when dedicated service concepts

Doing all the rendering and stuff like that, all of that.

I think the reasons why it crashes right now is because server probably loads something in.

And then it's like, oh, I need to replicate this to 100 or like to 60 players at the same time.

So like if someone spawns in on a different tile, the server then has to load the tile.

So that will for sure not happen on dedicated servers because dedicated servers will always have everything in memory.

The other issue was when people joined and too many people joined at the same time.

That's when it also struggled, so we tried to slow it down.

I don't know, maybe this is a dumb idea, but I wonder if there's any way to queue the joining thing?

It's

possible we could make some system for it that like... Because we can't keep track of how far replication-wise people have gotten that have joined.

So we can check like, oh, if...

If we're at high capacity, if the server's at high capacity, we could block people from joining until it clears, maybe?

By the way, Mazza has some important information.

Dedicated servers will cure COVID-19.

I think we can confirm that right now, right here.

That is 100% the case.

Dedicated service will come out just in time for a vaccine.
