Yay!
Snutt
All right, so let's come on in this journey.
So we released our game, right?
Yes.
We got some pretty good reviews.
Not all sites give reviews for Early Access games because they wait until the actual release, until we actually
review it some sites do like here's my early access review and blah blah blah so so it's still pretty cool to see like so many different outlets um talking about the game and stuff like that um
yeah
Snutt
it
Jace
was it was weird to see the the large outlets and a game on there
Snutt
again it's
Jace
just one of those wacky things where it's like you make a game and then
Kotaku and Rock Paper Shotgun and shit are, they're like writing articles about it.
Nathalie
And for me as well, it was like my first release and then like, you know, seeing Satisfactory next to GTA is
Snutt
like, what?
Yeah, that is weird.
Next to just chatting.
So this was the most insane part, I think, because on Twitch, we actually had more viewers at one point than Dota.
And that was like, holy shit.
Yeah.
And, of course, it's, like, just for a moment, but we'll take it.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
We'll take it.
We'll take that.
We'll take it.
100%.
Yeah.
And, yeah, we got, like, a ton of people watching us on Twitch.
Our Discord blew up.
Our Discord blew up before, but, like, around release, it got really big.
We're, like...
upper 90,000.
I don't know if we've hit 100,000 on Discord.
Yeah, 90-something.
And at the time, Discord... What the fuck
Nathalie
was
Snutt
that?
Spicy hiccups.
Spicy hiccups?
So at the time, Discord released their server discovery thing.
And what they did then was it was just like...
the most like used i'm not sure like exactly how it worked but there's something about like how the most used servers like the most active servers or something like that and our server just do up there we were like top six for a while that was crazy um like it's so weird
which is really weird like here we're closing up to overwatch in terms of people active and stuff like that and we're above minecraft the minecraft official minecraft discord stuff like that so that was that was pretty zany um thanks everyone who's on the discord thank you everyone yeah i just want to see it it is so it is so mind-blowing honestly yeah yeah um and
so
Snutt
So at the time, right, a few months into release, everyone was like,
oh,
Snutt
Epic Store, no one's going to buy the game there.
Jace
Yeah, because the Epic Store thing
Snutt
happened.
Yeah, Epic Store, right?
So we kind of went for that.
So Jay said...
We have sold well, we have sold 10 whole copies at the time of this tweet.
So we went from 10 copies, we went down to 9, but then we went up to 15, but then some of them refunded, so we're back down to 9 again.
Then
Jace
we
Snutt
went to eight.
Yeah, it was turbulent times.
Turbulent times.
So turbulent times.
Merry Christmas.
Whoa.
Nathalie
High five, buddy.
Snutt
We just got stream sniped by Darude.
Jace
We just got swatted.
Snutt
Too bad.
Oh, I should have switched.
Whatever.
Yeah, so it was turbulent times.
Yeah, turbulent times.
It was rough.
And the media picked up on this.
They picked up on it.
All right.
Before that, we got back to 10.
Right.
So this tweet was caught by a bunch of weird news sites.
One of which was like, satisfactory game only sold nine copies on Epic Games Store leading to dev Twitter tantrum.
Twitter tantrum.
Yeah, this is an amazing one.
Just a quick note.
Please don't like Google this website because you don't want to give them traffic because this is actually a dog shit website.
But this is hilarious.
All right.
So.
This website was like, it was not a bot because this was written.
I'm pretty sure because it was not written like the bot websites.
Wait, I just want to say one thing, right?
I've had some
Jace
people at that time comment or DM me saying, wait, I can't believe you only sold 10 copies.
I was really excited about the game.
I wanted you to be successful at it.
And they sort of believed that.
And I'm like, oh, no, no, no, no, no, we're doing fine.
It was just a joke, right?
But you've got to understand that I guess some people don't catch it, or maybe it's like a language barrier thing that would pick up on that.
However, an English website,
Snutt
journalist, wrote the following.
Anyone with any common business sense will tell you to sell your product through the largest distribution pipeline.
So they're basically trashing Epic here.
And they're going on like, oh, there's the 10, 12% cut over here, blah, blah, blah.
And it's like, while Epic is heavily promoting their store as being developer friendly, they've also been heavily promoting their store anti-consumer as well, blah, blah, blah.
And then it's like, we have Coffee Stain Studios, Satisfactory, was only in the St. Jill digits after refunds.
They believed all of
Jace
it.
And then they quote
Snutt
the tweet.
Can you imagine if we were announcing that we had nine and I put the gif of this woman and they're like, look at this official statement.
So they went on saying like, however, people begin mocking the developer for not releasing on Steam, where they probably would have had more than nine sales.
Okay, fair enough.
This rings especially true since according to Steam Spy, most of Coffee Stain games sell upwards at least one million copies on Steam.
That's a huge drop-off from going to one to two million copies down to just nine.
Jace
Turbulent times.
Snutt
Yeah.
So we kept tweeting, right?
Or rather, you kept tweeting.
You kept responding.
And it's like, yeah, nine is not satisfactory.
So the whole article is based essentially on those tweets, right?
So it's like, if we put it on Steam, maybe we'll send tail copies or something like that.
Well, that was odd.
Anyway.
Oh, yeah, so that was someone... Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
So in the article, they kept going around, like, Coffee Stain Studio developed quickly and acknowledged that vitriolic remark was made from the wrong account, which is based on the joke that you, like... That's
Jace
the, yeah, because, okay, so if you didn't know, on Twitter, there's my personal account and the Satisfactory account, right?
And they hate each other, and so they comment to each other, and they say mean things to each
Snutt
other.
Jace
Right.
So on that tweet on the left, what you can see is a tweet from Satisfactory saying, How about
Snutt
you
Jace
shut the fuck up, Jason?
Snutt
Which has like over 700 likes.
Yeah.
It's bizarre.
And also kind of like a meta joke here as well is that this was at the time when you were on vacation.
So I was doing, this was right about the time.
Oh, yeah, yeah.
So we were like, I was, you were handing off the Twitter account to me.
So I was going to start doing tweets from it.
But then our meta joke was like, now no one will know if you're trash talking yourself or if it's me.
Yeah.
So I replied with this when you said that.
I said, whoops, sent from wrong account.
Because we already tweeted that I was going to do it.
So that was the joke there.
But the website picked up on that and they were like, turns out that Snutt and Jace actually run the Satisfactory account and we're alternating.
By the way...
Jace then comes out to admit that he's got bipolar disorder.
Like, from fucking nowhere.
Just out of nowhere.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
And then it goes on like, Jace also has pronouns in his Twitter biography.
So that helps explain why he has an SW, uh, STW slant to the way he...
I didn't comment
Jace
on my Kristen
Snutt
Stewart gifs.
Yeah.
Shame.
None of that matters, though.
truly truly an amazing amazing article what was it what was it like for like
Jace
for you for example because you weren't even on twitter or anything like that no were you even aware of any of this stuff happening
Nathalie
yeah yeah like i would browse twitter just to read stuff
Jace
yeah
and
Nathalie
at the time i was like oh boy i'm happy i'm not on twitter now i've returned to twitter i don't know why
Jace
Do you know if this stuff even affected you as you worked or anyone else?
I
Nathalie
got
Jace
more affected by
Nathalie
seeing how many people were playing.
That for me was not anxiety, but it made me aware of like, oh shit,
Snutt
a lot of people
Nathalie
are seeing what I'm doing.
There's a lot at
Hannah
stake.
Snutt
Cool?
Yeah.
But yeah, in the end, this whole thing resolved with the update of the article saying, a Twitter user asked the Satisfactory account if the numbers were real.
And in a separate tweet, the account said, it was just kidding.
Got him.

All
Snutt
right, let's move on.
So we'll be regarding the story of copies sold.
Yes.
Let's continue.
So we were talking about how
we weren't sure how many copies we sold.
So we made an announcement.
We made a video.
Hey, we actually sold, at the time, half a million copies.
Jace
Another thing to note there is we didn't report this right away, because there was something strange.
And Birk was part of the discussion, too,
We didn't really know what to say.
We're not one of those companies where we're like, look at us, we're doing so great.
It's so wanky and corporate to
Snutt
be
Jace
like, we have sold 500,000 copies.
So we didn't know if we should say anything because it's like, it doesn't matter.
Or how to say it.
Snutt
I think honestly the only reason we probably did it was because of the epic stuff.
Jace
It's because there was pressure from the outside to say something.
That's why we did it.
And then even then we did it in a way where there was an entire Q&A video
and there was just jokes made about that this copy sold and then I just moved on and talked about other things because we didn't want to blow like a statement or anything
Snutt
it's just
Jace
it's just so weird and awkward
Hannah
yeah I think we were also just a bit shell-shocked as well with like
Snutt
how
Hannah
well everything was going
Snutt
and it's
Hannah
like like is this the thing we should do at all
Snutt
yeah
Hannah
regardless of anything it's just weird like we don't know what's going on
Snutt
And another thing that I forgot to put in the slides that I feel kind of bad about is that this was also the year, or kind of, it's not true because this contract was signed before, I think, but we were also acquired by THQ.
So this was around the time when we also were announcing that, hey, THQ, who are now known as Embracer Group,
we're purchasing Gofstein.
Jace
That was right around the epic thing.
Snutt
I think so.
The
Jace
exclusivity announcement.
So the timing was not kind.
Everything corporate.
Corporate takeover.
And they were separate from each other, right?
It wasn't like THQ made us do that.
But
Snutt
yeah, so like, we feel happy with the sense that we did.
Of course.
We did well.
In our, like, and people can believe whatever they want to believe about, like, me,
Hannah
me, me.
Yeah, sure.
That's
Snutt
how they sound.
So...
So this was cool.
We got tweeted by Tim Sweeney.
And I think the lead up for this as well is that I mentioned before that I was kind of like taking over the Twitter account for a while while Jace was on vacation.
And we were like, all right, what do I...
I remember this specific thing where when we were doing the handoff, the handoff, our handoff was like, hey, you're doing Twitter
now.
Snutt
Okay.
And I asked, like, is there anything that I shouldn't do?
And you were like, yeah, don't have Q&As on 8chan.
I'm like, cool.
I'll try to not do that.
Hannah
Shout out to Mark.
Shout out to Mark!
Snutt
Oh, shit.
That was amazing.
So that was also tied in with the THQ thing.
I don't want to go too deep into that.
We'll move on.
So one of the first things that happened while I got the handle was that Matthew Mercer tweeted us and he was like,
Hey, so we've been playing our game, it's like our Wyandine game as a couple, and we discovered this in the landscape, and we were like, oh, it's meant to be.
It's the Mercer Sphere.
It's the Mercer Sphere, which is ironically, not ironically, named after Matthew Mercer.
Because you're a huge fan.
Hannah
Yeah, so I'm a huge fan of Critical Role, which Matthew Mercer is the DM of, so is Birk, so that's why he's here.
And I put a lot of Critical Role references in the game, and this was one of them I named.
a character after Mercer and then subsequently the Mercer sphere was named after the character and so when this tweet happened we had a full-on freakout because holy shit you know this is like one of the people I look up to most in the world and it just escalated
Somehow.
Snutt
Because we had that full meltdown, Brian.
And I saw that and I was like, uh, do I...
Hannah
Like, Jace,
Snutt
what do I do?
This is literally the first thing that I was dealing with when I was taking over during the vacation.
It's like the
Hannah
most important part of
Snutt
my life.
But you did respond to Math, and you were like, hey, those spheres are named after you.
And he's like, wait, what?
And then, yeah, this chain was kind of nice.
It was so
Hannah
flattering.
It was really nice.
Snutt
And then what you don't see in this chain is all of us chiming in like, holy shit, what the fuck?
We're super big fans.
Yeah, I was
Hannah
like,
Snutt
what?
So that was really cool.
Yeah.
And should we?
No.
No?
Jace
No.
But I was able to sort of like DM with Matt a little bit and
You can tell your little story.
Hannah
Yeah, so a late birthday present, right?
Jace
Not that
Hannah
one.
Okay.
And also, we noticed that Matt was coming to Comic Con Sweden.
Right.
Like, a few months after this.
So, Berk and I were like, we have to go, right?
It's the first time he's coming to Sweden.
They barely ever go to Europe.
So, it's like, okay.
So, we first had you, like, contact him, like, hey...
Do you want to meet up for this?
Or whatever.
Jace
And he knows we exist now, so he'll report to his
Hannah
department.
Exactly.
And eventually we sort of saw that Matt and I started talking on Twitter and arranged a full-on dinner meetup.
And we went to the Comic Con and we met him and we had dinner with him.
We being who?
We being like Berk, me, we had Daniel, a friend of ours who we play D&D with, and also Linus, who's also a big fan that works here, casting, publishing.
So that was really, really cool.
And then also the event coordinator from Critical Role showed up, Brittany.
Joy of a human being.
So it was the best thing ever, because I had dinner with my hero, and it was amazing.
That's the thing.
Yeah, it was super cool.
So that was a
Birk
good weekend.
If
Hannah
you like Dungeons and Dragons and voice actors playing.
Snutt
Yeah, if you like Overwatch.
He's McCree.
Yeah,
Hannah
these are voice actors.
Snutt
He's in a lot of stuff.
He's in
Jace
Judgment,
Snutt
actually.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Hannah
He's in Fallout 4.
Snutt
Monster Hunter.
Like, he's in a lot of stuff.
Hannah
lots of things and like the other Critical Role people are also super famous like we have Laura Bailey who just got nominated for Gears 5 like voice acting and we got Ashley Johnson who's Ellie in The Last of Us and also like does like real-life acting as well it's super cool super cool people pretty insanely recommend it do you see his McCree cosplay
super dope he wore that on the Critical Role stream like their Halloween scream they all wore costumes from characters that they voiced oh really so yeah because that was on point Sam had a Phoenix Wright costume so good Ashley Johnson was in the Avengers was she I think she was maybe that's that's oh yeah yeah she was she made a cameo there yeah truth truth hello people that are joining by the way
Snutt
All right, shall we?
Shall we move on?
Let's do it.
Yes, so... Bye.
Just here for Matt, I guess.
I'm just here for Matt.
Hashtag, if Matt is watching this, by the way, huge shout out.
We love you.
Matt's
Jace
not going to watch
Snutt
this.
No.
No, whatever.
Don't kid yourself.
Just let me dream, okay?
Let me have my moment.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
At this time, I think it was April, I think, when this happened, one month later or something like that, we went to an Unreal Developer Conference.
